Book Review: The Time Garden

This is my first "adult coloring book." The trend of coloring is sweeping the nation and you can see numerous coloring books in every bookstore. Coloring has become popular for adults as a form of meditative practice. We are all SO busy these days, and we are constantly on some type of electronic device. Even many of us read books on e-readers! A coloring book is pretty hard to make digital (though I'm sure it can be done) and some things are better left in their non-digital state.

The book itself is beautiful and tells the story of a child exploring San Francisco.

In Chinese Medicine we have the theory of yin and yang. Yang and yin energy balance and complement each other. To have good health, yin and yang energy should be as balanced as possible. Yang energy is bright, loud and active. It is represented by the sun, daylight and summertime. Yin energy is dark, reflective, serene and restorative. It is represented by the moon, nighttime (rest) and winter (hibernation). As you can see very clearly, our society is in love with yang energy! We are busy all of the time--go, go, going! I always instruct my patients to bring more yin energy into their lives (and this is something I have to remind myself of as well). When we have too little yin time in our day we can experience symptoms such as anxiety, fatigue, digestive upset, insomnia and muscle soreness. It can lead to syndromes such as adrenal fatigue when we don't take time to slow down and quiet our minds.

Good activities to promote yin energy: restorative yoga, tai chi, reading a book for pleasure, taking a stroll just for fun (not necessarily exercise), coloring, watching a funny and uplifting movie, etc.

The enemies of yin energy are: multi-tasking, texting while trying to go to bed, trying to control others, etc.

So pick up this book and have some relaxing time!

Note: The book was provided to me for free from Blogging for Books.

Giving Thanks Through Journaling

I've recently started keeping a gratitude journal. Have you heard of gratitude journaling? Gratitude journaling has gotten popular in recent years because of studies showing that attitudes of gratitude can greatly increase your physical, mental and emotional health. Check out this article from Forbes on 7 Scientifically Proven Benefits of Gratitude.

The basics of gratitude journaling is that you write down 3 or more things that you are grateful for each day. It can range from very small things (seeing a pretty flower, eating a satisfying meal, an extra hour of sleep on the weekend) or the grand (taking a vacation of lifetime, having a baby). I've found journaling useful in helping to shift almost any type of complaints I might have. It's not about being a "Pollyanna," but it is about realizing how much you probably have to be grateful for that you aren't aware of. So the next time you think, dang, "I have the clean the bathroom AGAIN"--catch yourself and also be thankful that you have indoor plumbing and how cool that actually is! Another trick I've learned is when you are paying a bill--say your health insurance bill or your electric bill--is to say "thank you" as your pay the bill (instead of griping in your head about the expense) for whatever service you are paying for. So as you pay your electric bill say--"I'm so happy to have air conditioning and light at night so I can watch my favorite movies and read my favorite books."

There are many gratitude journaling apps for iPhone and Android (which worked for me), but you can also use a plain 'ol paper journal.

Have you ever kept a gratitude journal? What was your experience?
