Adrenal Fatigue Testing and Treatment in Jacksonville, Florida
By Kendra Lay, Acupuncture Physician, Applied Clinical Nutritionist
The adrenal glands are the body's stress absorbers. They keep us alert, awake and working hard during times of stress. As part of the body's endocrine system, they pump out stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones, when used for short or limited periods of time are a useful and normal thing. However, over time, an overabundance of these hormones can lead to the adrenal glands getting tired and hormonal production becoming less than optimal.
Adrenal fatigue is really a bit of a misnomer. In recent years, the term Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Dis-regulation" has fallen into favor. There are several different stages of HPA dysfunction, with actual "fatigue" being the final stage. Before reaching this stage, there are other warning signs and symptoms that can be controlled and treated before getting to fatigue.
It is important to get tested to see where you are on the continuum of "adrenal burnout." Symptoms of too high or too low cortisol can mimic each other, and the treatment is different depending on if you are too high or too low. That's why actually getting tested is important so that we can establish a baseline and direct treatment properly for your specific condition.
Adrenal Dis-regulation greatly impacts many health concerns, such as:
And many common symptoms like:
In my practice, I use a special saliva test that examines your cortisol output at four different times of the day to find out what stage or level of adrenal dis-regulation you are experiencing. I also prefer to run some other labs to look at some other functional causes for your symptoms, such as in-depth thyroid studies, vitamin D, a full iron panel and markers for sugar handling. Additonal testing such as testing for gut issues or mold toxicity can also prove useful, depending on the case.
The adrenal test in our office in Jacksonville, Florida is from ZRT Labs and costs $170.
