Book Review: Everyday Detox

I participate in a really cool program called Blogging for Books where I receive free copies of recently published books in exchange for an honest review. I usually pick books on health and wellness and/or clean recipe books, since, well, that's my job! :)

This time my selection was Everyday Detox by Megan Gilmore. I guess Megan runs a popular website called Detoxinista, which I'll admit I'd never heard of before. Well, I am a sucker for recipe books, especially healthy ones and especially those with beautifully photographed food. I basically use recipe books and food magazines for inspiration when I'm making my weekly meal plans, and if I can't see what I'm making then it's all over. I am notorious for tweaking recipes to my liking, so a visual guide to the dish inspires my creative cooking juices.

This book is a very solid little recipe book to some very healthy meals. All of the recipes are very heavy on the vegetables, which is great. The name of the book may throw some off--maybe "detox" food doesn't sound delicious? Why would you want to "detox" anyway? Simply put, we have a lot of toxins in our water, air and food. Taking a break from processed foods to give your body a break is a good idea. The recipes in the book cut out most grains (except for pseudo-grains like buckwheat and quinoa), most dairy (except for goat cheese), sugar, processed foods and meat.

Some of the recipes included are:
  • chocolate chia shake
  • eggs benedict with healthy hollandaise
  • blender banana pancakes
  • everyday basil vinaigrette
  • quinoa tabouli
  • curried sweet potato bisque
  • skillet fish tacos with citrus slaw
  • maple mustard glazed salmon
  • raw lemon bars

Sounds pretty good, right? It even includes healthy desserts--bonus! Overall, I think this book is a good one to add to my collection and I like that at least half of the recipes are photographed. I personally would add some high quality protein to a lot of these meals--such as wild caught shrimp, wild salmon, hormone and antibiotic free chicken or grass-fed beef to make my body a little happier.
