An Invitation to Mental Health Professionals...Come Experience Acupuncture
January 2021
Greetings!
My name is Kendra Lay and I am the owner of Be Well Healing Arts, I’m an Acupuncture Physician who has been practicing in Jacksonville for over seven years. I am reaching out to you as a mental health professional because I want to raise awareness of the benefits of acupuncture for mental health concerns. With the events of 2020 and the continuing pandemic, I have seen the news reports and also firsthand in my practice, that there is a great increase in anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns right now.
Did you know that acupuncture can help people who are experiencing chronic and acute stress, anxiety, trauma, burnout, grief and depression? One of my passions in my practice is helping patients with these mental health concerns. I’ve seen countless patients benefit from acupuncture to help symptoms such as depression, insomnia, sadness, hopelessness, rage, despair and agitation. Acupuncture can also greatly reduce physical manifestations of stress such as neck and shoulder tension, digestive upset, headaches, jaw pain, back pain, heart palpitations and more.
Acupuncture benefits mental health because it helps to calm the nervous system and gets patients out of fight or flight mode into a parasympathetic state. Research has shown that acupuncture helps to release endorphins and feel-good neuro-chemicals like oxytocin and serotonin, as well as reduce cortisol levels. This article from TIME magazine explores the underlying physiologic responses of acupuncture and how it reduces stress hormones in the body.
Acupuncture falls into the category of somatic therapies for trauma such as yoga, exercise, massage, mindful breathing and grounding exercises. Auricular (ear) acupuncture has been used for over 40 years to relieve trauma, anxiety and stress. I offer auricular acupuncture and the NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) ear protocol in my practice. The NADA ear acupuncture protocol has been used widely in response to large scale traumatic events and natural disasters, such as the aftermath of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, with great success. Ear acupuncture stimulates the vagus nerve, which of course puts us into a sympathetic nervous system response and bridges the gap between the mind and the body. It also reduces inflammation, which has many positive effects on the body - both mental and physical.
I am a big believer in counseling, psychological services and talk therapy. I have great respect for what you do and I always refer patients out to therapy when indicated. I love working with patients who are also undergoing talk therapy because the synergy of acupuncture and therapy provides a wonderful, comprehensive benefit for the patient. It is also interesting to note that acupuncture can be used in conjunction with pharmaceutical interventions for anxiety and depression safely, and that it can even enhance the effectiveness of these medications (here's a meta-analysis about the combination of medication and acupuncture). However, acupuncture is also a great option for those patients and clients looking for non-pharmaceutical options.
You can check out this page on my website which includes testimonials from patients about using acupuncture for mental health concerns.
If you’ve never considered acupuncture as a complimentary treatment for your clients while participating in counseling, I invite you explore it. I’d love to offer you a free treatment so that you can experience acupuncture yourself, meet me and learn more about how acupuncture works. I’d also love the opportunity to meet you and learn about your practice.
I strive to be a part of a vibrant and varied community of health care providers so that we can give patients and clients the best care possible.
Feel free to explore my website. You can schedule your complimentary treatment with me online (just book as a new patient and put a note in the comments when you book that you’re a mental health professional who is redeeming this offer) or call me at 904-990-3228. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for the important work you are doing to help the members of our community.
Sincerely,
